Now that we’ve entered May, EA has finally revealed their financial results for the previous quarter. As well as the Q4 2019 results, the company looked back on the previous year as a whole, through its “powerful milestones” and the “things that did not go as we planned”, and they also revealed what players can expect in the next 12 months. Amongst all of the titles that the company has already announced, players can look forward to the usual offering of sports titles this summer, and new Need for Speed and Plants vs. Zombies titles in Q3 2019.
We know few details about the new Need for Speed and Plants vs. Zombies titles. They will be arriving on consoles in Q3 2019, which is some time between October and December 2019. The PvZ title will be a shooter, and together with an Amazon UK leak that mentioned a new Garden Warfare title, the game is expected to be Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 3 . Meanwhile, Need for Speed will revitalise the “street racer versus cop fantasy”. More is expected to be revealed on both titles during EA Play in June. Of course, in the same time period, there will be Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order on November 15th.
Before that, there’s a full roster of sports titles due to release in Q2 2019, so some time between July and September 2019. There will be FIFA 20 , Madden NFL 20, NHL 20 , and NBA LIVE 20 . At some point during these three months, there will also be Sea of Solitude, the EA Originals title revealed two years ago.
During the last year, the company hit a new milestone by growing their player base to more than 500 million active player accounts. The main FIFA instalments account for 45 million players, while FIFA mobile and PC free-to-play games account for over 100 million players between them. Apex Legends also brought along millions of players; although an exact figure wasn’t provided, nearly 30% of the games players were new to EA.
The result is that some of EA’s existing titles will continue to grow too. At EA Play, we will learn more about Season 2 of Apex Legends , and the team is looking to bring the game to China and Korea, as well as on mobile platforms. EA Play will also give us more details on the summer and fall chapters of content for Battlefield V, especially as the recent Firestorm mode brought over 1 million players back to the game. The Sims 4 will continue to get DLC, and Star Wars Battlefront II will also continue to receive updates.
In contrast to Apex Legends , Anthem “did not meet our expectations” according to EA’s CEO Andrew Wilson. Despite this, the game became “the most digital game we have ever launched” according to EA’s COO and CFO Blake Jorgensen. A total of 49% of the game’s sales on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One were through digital marketplaces. Wilson also stated that “we believe in the team at BioWare, and we also believe in what they set out to achieve with this game – building a new IP and melding genres to reach a new audience”. The team is currently working on “issues that began to manifest as the game reached scale”, as well as more depth and variety in the game’s missions. There will be more content updates and in-game events in the future, and only time will tell whether these updates manage to turn the game’s fortunes around.
