Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Mega Thread

Our 1.12 update starts rolling out today at 10AM PT on PS4 and Xbox One, delivering new content and gameplay improvements across all three modes of Black Ops 4!

There’s a lot included in this update as we detailed in our preview last week, plus more planned for later this week, including Mastery Camos in Blackout and Zombies, full camo progression in Blackout, support for Mastercrafts/Reactive Camos/Black Market camos in Zombies, and Zero’s Outfit Unlock mission in Blackout.

Here’s the lowdown on what’s new in each mode, with full patch notes down below:

Our 1.12 update brings new gameplay improvements and Featured Playlists to Multiplayer, including Blackjack’s Gun Game featuring the new KAP 45 auto-pistol in the mix, and the debut of Hardcore Moshpit in the Featured category. Endurance Chaos Moshpit also returns by popular demand, joining Mercenary Capture Moshpit and Safeguard in the Featured category.

Looking ahead, our next Multiplayer weapon balancing pass is underway and planned for our upcoming 1.13 update slated for February. This is planned to include weapon balance in both Core and Hardcore, potential tuning changes for Attachments, and more.

We’ve made a new round of tuning changes with this update focusing on Armor , Concussion Grenades , and Cluster Grenades in Blackout. These include reductions in the damage mitigation percentages of all three levels of Armor, removed explosive and melee protections for Level 3 Armor, reduced status effect duration and radius for Concussions, increased fuse time and mini-cluster damage for the Cluster Grenade, and more. See below for the full list of changes and let us know what you think after you’ve spent some time in-game.

We’re also debuting Ambush today in Blackout on PS4, our newest limited-time mode where players only have sniper rifles, melee attacks, and launchers at their disposal in a circle that never stops collapsing once it starts! Down But Not Out continues its second week on other platforms this week, and will be replaced by Ambush next week.

Full camo progression is also planned to come to Blackout later this week on PS4, featuring a new mechanic to unlock different weapon camos as you play through Blackout matches. We’ll have more info on what to expect as we get closer to adding this feature, which will include a path to unlocking Gold, Diamond, and Dark Matter camos in Blackout. Zero’s Outfit Unlock mission is also scheduled to drop into Blackout later this week on PS4, adding a new quest to unlock “The Numbers” outfit for Zero in Multiplayer and Blackout.

It’s a big week for Zombies! Classic and loot weapons arrive in the Mystery Box in all Zombies maps with this update, including the MP 40, Grav, Daemon 3XB, SWAT RFT, and KAP 45. Camo progression will also become available in the Armory for the MP 40 and Grav, with progression and customization for loot weapons available in the Armory as those weapons are unlocked in the Black Market.

Several gameplay improvements, bug fixes, and stability updates have been made across the board, and we’re also planning on adding support for Mastery Camos (Gold, Diamond, and Dark Matter) in Zombies shortly after our 1.12 update goes live, as well as support for Mastercrafts, Reactive Camos, and Black Market camos in the Armory.

Our second Gauntlet arrives on PS4 with “Veni, Vidi, Zombie!” today in IX as well, offering up 30 new rounds of insane challenges to put your zombie-killing prowess to the test. Remember, each Gauntlet match is timed for competitive play, and we can’t wait to see the best speed-runs to come out of the community. Jump in and start slaying!

“Barbarians” Special Event on All Platforms

Our “Barbarians” Special Event continues on PS4 and kicks off today on Xbox One and PC, delivering 25 more Tiers of earnable loot, including the new KAP 45 full-auto pistol. This event stream appears below the Operation Absolute Zero stream in the Black Market, so players can unlock two pieces loot with each Tier earned during the event.

Competitive Update

We’ve incorporated feedback from the Call of Duty World League, pro players and some members of team management, and the larger Call of Duty competitive community, and today we’re announcing several updates to the CWL competitive ruleset, along with plans for the World League Hub and League Play.

Thank god that damn concussion grenade was finally nerfed. Being able to actually react while blind is going to be the nicest change

Nothing concrete here, but an interesting video if you’re wondering about upcoming content.

Don’t forget this weekend is 2XP everywhere…

While some events only focus on Multiplayer or Zombies game modes, the Valentine’s Quad Feed event will be giving everyone something to look forward to by featuring 2XP promotions for Multiplayer, Zombies, and Blackout.

The event will kick off at 10am PST / 1pm EST / 6pm GMT and run until that same time on February 19, allowing plenty of time to capitalize on all the event has to offer.

The most anticipated portion of this event is surely the Multiplayer side of things where players will get both 2XP to help with the Prestige grind and 2XP for Weapon XP to max out as many loadouts as possible.

Double XP, maybe I’ll do some Blackout then.

Meanwhile Blackout players that have reached Echelon 80 should be receiving a new reward, which Treyarch teased on Reddit with the image below:

Elsewhere, Team Deathmatch has had an update so that the standard score limit is 100 up from 75, following player feedback. Kill Confirmed is up to 80 from 60 as well.

Lame. I’ll pass (if I even get that far).

Instead of losing the 4 Blackout characters you should just unlock new ones. Or updated for each prestige. Maybe have the Ranger with a glow in the Dark G String. @beers_and_leafs would prestige then, he loves glowing items that give away his position.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Loot Boxes Cause Controversy

Operation Grand Heist is due to hit Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 next week. The content hit PlayStation 4 this week, and some aspects of it are already causing disconcernation amongst players. One of the things added in the new Season is Cases, which are the game’s equivalent of loot boxes, and the problem is that some aspects of the game are now being locked behind them.

When the game was released, it didn’t have Supply Drops. With the start of Operation Grand Heist, these have made a return. Certain items, like weapons and characters, can be earned at certain points in the new Black Market Operation — these are known as Blackjack’s Reserves. These items are also available in Cases, which can be earned through playing Multiplayer or Blackout, as well as being purchasable for a premium. The problem is that once players hit Tier 100 in the Battle Pass, they are prevented from earning any more items through the Tier System. Cases are still available through gameplay, although players are reporting it takes around 2-3 hours to earn a single Case. Of course, players can also buy them at a cost of three Cases for 200 Call of Duty Points (£1.99 or regional equivalent) if there’s content they want that they still haven’t unlocked.

The other bone of contention is that there’s no duplicate protection like there is in games like Apex Legends . For every third duplicate item, players can re-roll to swap it for something else, but they’re still stuck with the first two duplicates.

During the game’s development, Treyarch studio design director David Vonderhaar stated in a Game Informer interview that all Blackout characters would be unlockable through gameplay. Since the game’s release, that has changed. Some characters are only available through the Cases, while others are attached to the Season Pass. Now Vonderhaar has stated in an interview with VG247 that the change in direction wasn’t necessarily through developer choice:

Things change along the way … and not all of them are design decisions. I can tell you what we have done and what we plan on doing, but things change that I can not predict or I didn’t know about. Doubly true with the business side of things which have little insight into and even less control over.

The Call of Duty games are no stranger to trying to monetise content, and neither is publisher Activision. Vonderhaar’s comment seems to hint that the decision to add Cases was from the publisher rather than something wanted by the development team. Either way, players aren’t happy, and it remains to be seen if anything will change in the future.

Of course people are upset. 60 dollar game, 50 dollar season pass, in game microtransactions and now loot boxes? Yeah, it’s a little silly. Gamers are a bit sick of being fleeced.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Loot Boxes Changed Following Controversy

Last Friday, news broke that players were becoming unhappy with certain aspects of the Operation Grand Heist season in Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, more specifically the implementation of Cases, the game’s loot boxes. Developer Treyarch listened to the feedback and they’ve made some changes that will be ready for Xbox One players when the update goes live tomorrow.

Players can now earn Cases by completing Tiers at the end of the Contraband stream. At the same time, players will earn double the amount of progress towards Cases unlocked through gameplay. Treyarch has reverted back to an earlier version of the Tier Skips too, so these now grant a Case for each Tier across all game modes.

When Treyarch implemented the system on PlayStation 4 last Tuesday, the aim was to allow players to unlock content before they hit Tier 100. Unfortunately this meant that progress after Tier 100 was affected negatively. These changes should help to solve that problem.

An update on Friday also introduced Close Quarters Frenzy Quads as a Featured Playlist in Blackout. Here, players team up to battle their enemies using only SMGs, pistols, shotguns, melee attacks, and launchers. The Collapse also happens at a faster speed. The winner, of course, is the last team standing.

Close Quarters Frenzy Quads is available right now. Operation Grand Heist will begin tomorrow, February 26th, for Xbox One players — you can find more details on that here.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Patch Brings Back Blackout Duos

Seeing as Xbox One players are a week behind PlayStation 4 players, this means this week’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 patch has introduced the new Alcatraz Blackout map for players to try out. In amongst the rest of the gameplay additions and bug fixes, Treyarch also reintroduced Blackout Duos and added Skill Divisions to League Play.

Alcatraz is a more compact Blackout map that is available for all players to try out, including those currently playing through the free play trial. You can find more details here and some tips and tricks here. In addition, Blackout Duos returns to the game today. Treyarch hasn’t clarified if the mode will be returning permanently or if the mode will only be a temporary addition.

Skill Divisions have been added to the World League Hub. These represent a player’s skill level based on their performance compared to the general gaming population, and players will be placed based on their current skill rating. Half of the population will be placed in the Competitor Division, with only the elite 2% of players making it into the Master Division. The Divisions are in addition to the current progressive rank system.

We also got a brief look at a feature coming to Xbox One next week. Infected is a new Party Game that pits a team of Survivors against a single patient zero. Survivors will win by surviving until the timer runs out. The Infected have to grow their horde by spreading the disease amongst the survivors, and the Infected will have a full zombie character model and sound effects.

You can see a full list of gameplay improvements and bug fixes in the patch notes (or look below). The update is available now, aside from Infected, which will arrive on April 16th.

Infected Makes its Black Ops 4 Debut on PS4

This time around, Infected has a zombie-themed twist – every member of the Infected team is entirely zombified, with a full zombie character model and sound effects to match! Skill Divisions Now Live in League Play

Starting today on all platforms, the World League Hub’s new Skill Divisions now reflect each player’s skill level within the World League Rank system based on their standing in the overall competitive population, in addition to League Play’s existing progressive rank system. Players will be placed into specific Skill Divisions based on their current skill rating, starting with 50% of the population in Competitor Division and culminating with the top 2% in Master Division. Time to climb!
