The new Close Quarters Frenzy variant, available on all platforms December 14-17, features faster circle collapse, and limits weapon options to CQC only. You’ll be able to loot SMGs, shotguns, pistols, and melee weapons, but that’s about it.


Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Double XP Event and Nuketown DECLASSIFIED Video

A special event for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is now live, giving double XP in Zombies and Multiplayer and double Merits in Blackout, with a special Blackout game mode for the duration of the event:

Limited Time Mode

Character Missions

  • Increased the chances of finding a Character Mission item in a Zombies Stash.
  • Increased the number of Zombies Stashes that can include Character Mission items per match.

An earlier version of the time-limited Close Quarters Frenzy game mode game mode appeared in the Blackout Beta, but this time around Treyarch has added more weapons and improved the gameplay. The rules are simple:

  1. Outrun an even faster Collapse than usual.
  2. Take out your enemies using only SMGs, shotguns, pistols, launchers, and melee weapons.
  3. Don’t die.

Treyarch has also shared some information about the upcoming addition of Blackout Weapon Camos and Custom Games:

Weapon Camo support is coming to Blackout across the entire mode, including in Custom Games. Here’s how it works, with more details to come with our next update:

  • Camos earned in Multiplayer, Zombies, and the Black Market can be applied in Blackout.
  • Players set up their Weapon Camos in the new Armory menu prior to a match.
  • Player will see their selected camos applied when they pick up those weapons in-game.
  • Support will be included for Blackout Custom Games.

Blackout Custom Games will allow players to drop into their own private match to explore the map, visit destinations at their own pace, and practice Black Ops 4’s battle royale experience with teams of friends. As a starting point, Custom Games in Blackout will be introduced with a maximum player count of 12. As with all features in Black Ops 4, this will evolve over time as we evaluate how players are engaging with the system, and that includes increasing player count and expanding feature support.

At launch next week, Blackout Custom Games will support:

  • Up to 12 players per match
  • Solos, Duos, or Quads
  • Weapon Camo support
  • Full character customization support
  • Online only to ensure each Custom Game is up-to-date

Treyarch has kicked off a new intel video series with a look at the history of the iconic Nuketown multiplayer map. The DECLASSIFIED video series features inside knowledge from the developers, and this one explains what level designer Adam Hoggatt was thinking when he came up with the Nuketown concept.

Black Ops 4 Patch Brings a New Season and a Star-Studded Round of Zombies

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 has a new update bringing a whole season of content wrapped up in “Operation Absolute Zero”. You’ll find a new Specialist, a ton of new gear and new maps. In addition a whole new Zombies experience is now available if you have the Black Ops Pass.

We covered some of the content coming in the update in an earlier story, but if you want to see the more extensive patch notes you can see them here. The major updates for “Absolute Zero” are the arrival of new Specialist Zero and 100 tiers of new loot in the Black Market:

Multiplayer: Zero, Black Ops 4’s new Specialist armed with the EMP Disruptor grenade and Ice Pick hacking tool.

Blackout: The debut of Hijacked, the new ARAV armored vehicle, and new IX Zombies Character Missions.

Black Market: 100 new Tiers of earnable loot, including new MP weapons, Blackout characters, Mastercrafts, Epic Outfits, Reactive Camos, Weapon Camos, and more.

The exciting news for Black Ops Pass owners is the arrival of a new Zombies adventure featuring a star-studded Hollywood cast. Here’s the trailer for “Dead of the Night”:

In case you couldn’t identify those iconic actors, they are Kiefer Sutherland, Helena Bonham Carter, Brian Blessed, and Charles Dance. And in case you missed it, this new Zombies chapter comes with its own set of achievements which we revealed this morning.

I’m so mad at that last game. Basically the perfect round of Blackout. Great gear, in good places with the circle, 4 kills and got down to the final 4 before Blackout crashed. Second time that happened when I’m at the very end (and in a good place).

Blackout crashed again for me tonight. Wasn’t even playing, only spectating. This really sucks as I can’t trust it to keep me in game as it goes on. Hopefully they get a patch out soon.

Jan. 8 Update: New Featured Playlists, Details on Mastery Camos in Zombies & Blackout / Upcoming Zombies Features / Blackout Looting Improvements / League Play

Happy New Year from everyone here at the studio – we hope you’re all rested up and ready for an incredible year of Black Ops 4 content! Today’s update is all about what’s coming soon in 2019.

First up: we’ve updated our post-holiday MP playlists into an all-out Moshpit bonanza on all platforms, including Endurance Chaos Moshpit in this week’s Featured Playlist showcase, along with Mercenary Capture Moshpit, Mercenary Hardcore Moshpit, Deathmatch Moshpit, and Map Pack Moshpit in the Featured category. We’ve also made stability improvements in MP and Zombies in today’s patch as we prepare for what’s in store later this month… see below for details.

With Black Ops 4’s launch window behind us and Operation Absolute Zero in full swing on all platforms, we’re hard at work on upcoming features and new content across all three modes. As we gear up for 2019, we’re kicking off our first community update of the year with details on some of our most anticipated upcoming features:

  • Mastery Camos in Zombies and Blackout
  • Upcoming Features in Zombies
  • Improved Looting in Blackout on consoles
  • League Play in Ranked Multiplayer

Mastery Camos in Zombies and Blackout

Many of you have been asking about bringing Gold, Diamond, and Dark Matter camos over from Multiplayer into Zombies and Blackout, particularly after the recent launch of Weapon Camo support in Blackout. We hear you, and we have a feature incoming that will support equipping these camos in all modes while preserving what those camos represent.

There is a reason these specific types of weapon progression camo are not shared across modes: they are designed to represent that players have completed a mode-specific challenge progression. Gameplay is very different across Multiplayer, Zombies, and Blackout, and we want the bragging rights that go with these camos to mean something in the modes where they’re shown off. As such, we’re building out Mastery Camo progression systems in both Zombies and Blackout that have unique, custom-tailored challenges that will represent that players have completed challenges designed for the modes where they are equipped.

We’re planning to deliver Mastery Camos in both modes in late January as our teams continue to work on the next round of new features, content, and events coming to Black Ops 4 this year. Stay tuned to these community updates to be the first to know more.

Upcoming Zombies Features

With five Zombies experiences now available following Dead of the Night ’s release on all platforms, the team is laser-focused on developing new features and challenges for the Zombies community to sink their teeth into in 2019, in addition to more Zombies experiences coming throughout the year for Black Ops Pass holders.

Next week, we’re introducing the first series of this year’s new Zombies features and content with Gauntlets launching first in Voyage of Despair and the addition of three new Elixirs on PS4, plus new balancing changes to existing Elixirs! And as luck would have it, there’s a very Zombies-specific date coming up next week when we’ll have more details to share about these features and more for Zombies coming in 2019. See you then.

Improved Looting in Blackout on Consoles

After additional testing and iteration, we’re excited to announce that we’ll be rolling out a much-improved interface for looting in Blackout on consoles in next week’s 1.11 update! This includes an easier-to-navigate interface that allows console players to quickly scroll through a multi-row grid, loot the items they want, and get back into the fight even faster. Thanks for all of your feedback on the current Blackout experience, and watch for more details on our updated interface next week.

League Play

As we mentioned back in our Operation Absolute Zero announcement blog, the Black Ops 4 competitive season is a core focus for us heading into 2019. Now that we’ve built the foundation for our competitive feature set with the launches of CWL Custom Games, CODCaster, and Live Event Viewer, we’re dedicated to rolling out continuing World League Hub features over the coming months.

This all kicks off with the launch of League Play by the end of January , which we know many of you are eagerly anticipating. League Play will operate a little differently this time around. The system is designed to emulate a schedule more like the pros play, where League Play events will be intense and frequent but shorter duration, generally spanning weekends or 3-day periods.

In between those events, Scrims will be run as an unranked playlist using CWL rules so that players and teams can sharpen their skills before a competition. Both League Play events and Scrims will use skill-based matchmaking, where focus has been applied to making sure skill matches are as accurate as possible without resulting in empty lobbies or long wait times. League ladders will be built around 50-player groupings to ensure the most intense competition for these shorter-duration events. We’ll provide more around how the ranking system works along with other details as we approach the launch date.

Our planned schedule is to release the World League Hub and first League Play event by the end of January. That said, we want to make sure that we’ve spent enough time play-testing and incorporating feedback before it launches, so this date is subject to change. We love ranked play as much as you do, and that’s why we’re taking the time required to give League Play the attention it deserves. From there, we’ll continue to release new World League Hub features, including Teams and Clans for our competitive-focused players.

Timing on all of the above features is subject to change based on development, and we’ll keep everyone informed with more precise info as we get closer to launching these new features.

Zombies: 115 Day Celebration Event, Gauntlets and New Epic Elixirs on PS4, Elixir Balancing Updates + More

January 15 is 115 Day, and this year’s Zombies celebration is bigger than ever.

We’re kicking off our 115 Day Celebration Event with Zombies 2XP, Zombies 2X Weapon XP, and 2X Nebulium Plasma starting 10AM PT Jan. 15 through Jan. 18 on all platforms, along with the debut of Gauntlets and three new Epic Elixirs on PS4 and Elixir balancing updates ! We’ll also be testing out some new Concoctions in the Laboratory over the coming weeks, so keep an eye out for additional bundles for your newly-earned Nebulium Plasma.

But that’s just the beginning. On Tuesday, we’ll have news detailing several features and new content coming to Zombies over the next few months, including a preview of what’s already in the works for our 1.12 update for late January. Zombies Director Jason Blundell will also be in attendance later in the day, so mark your calendar and clear your schedule.

Now, to address the 800-pound zombie gorilla in the room… what are Gauntlets and how do they add to the overall Zombies experience? Glad you asked.

Gauntlets in Black Ops 4 Zombies are curated 30-round challenges with unique rules for each round, kicking off with “Unsinkable” in Voyage of Despair . Players will receive Bronze, Silver, and Gold medals and special tier-based rewards upon completing rounds 10, 20, and 30, as well as a unique reward (and bragging rights) for completing round 30 without failing a round. Players will also earn bonus Nebulium Plasma rewards when reaching each new milestone for the first time, so it pays to give every Gauntlet run your best shot.

Rules can vary wildly round-to-round, ranging from weapon restrictions and time limitations to area defense challenges with dangerous enemy modifiers, and everything in-between. If you and your crew fail to complete a round as instructed, you’ll earn a Strike. If you receive three Strikes, it’s game over and you’ll have to start from round 1 again. While getting to round 10 will prove challenging for casual players, completing all 30 rounds will test even the most seasoned Zombies veterans… and only the best of the best will emerge victorious with no downs or Strikes.

Because we’ve also designed Gauntlets to be endlessly replayable in a competitive setting, the rules for each of the 30 rounds are permanently set and all Gauntlet matches are timed , so we expect to see some incredible speed runs from the community long after you’ve achieved your first Gold medal!

“Unsinkable” in Voyage of Despair is just the first of many Gauntlets to come in 2019, each with their own set of all-new challenges to master. Blackout: Improved Looting Interface on Consoles, New Limited-Time Modes

This update also delivers our new looting interface to Blackout on consoles, allowing players to scroll through a multi-row grid, loot the items they’re looking for, and get back to the action as quickly as possible. This should also alleviate some other interface issues that console players have experienced in the past, and we’re excited to hear what you think when the update drops next week.

We’ve also got two new limited-time modes coming soon to Blackout starting next week! We’ll have all the details on what each of these new modes brings to the game in an upcoming update, plus the reveal of more Blackout news coming soon.

Multiplayer: Black Ops Pass Maps in Full Rotation, Featured Playlist Updates, Setting the Stage for League Play

With the upcoming 1.11 update, Elevation and Madagascar will be added to full map rotation for Black Ops Pass holders, including Hardcore playlists. Moving forward, we’ll add new MP maps into full rotation as they’re released.

Speaking of playlist updates, we’ll have a fresh batch of rotating Featured Playlists coming into MP with 1.11, along with additional stability fixes and other quality-of-life improvements. Stay tuned for next week’s patch notes for all the details.

This update will also help to set the stage for League Play’s launch by the end of January, which we announced in our community update on January 8. Watch for more details on League Play as we get closer to launching the World League Hub, and tune into the CWL Pro League Qualifiers on Jan. 16-20 to watch all the action unfold as 28 teams compete to secure their place in the Black Ops 4 Pro League at

I still cannot justify $50 for the season pass and i have been playing daily. If it was like $30 I would probably get it. Just let me buy the map pack by itself.


They can’t do that as it really fucks up matchmaking. In previous CoDs you could only find matches if you had all or none of the map pack. Partial packs would put you in a queue forever as it couldn’t match enough players.


Damn, I remember hearing about that.


Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 Update Introduces Down But Not Out

The weekly updates continue to roll in for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, and as promised last week, Xbox One players now get new Elixirs and Gauntlets in Zombies mode. As well as that, there’s a new limited time Blackout mode, and refresh of the Featured Playlist section of the multiplayer modes.

In Zombies, three new Elixirs have been added to the list — Perk Up, Refresh Mint, and Conflagration Liquidation. Treyarch also promises that more Concoction bundles will be added to the Zombies Laboratory in the next few weeks. Meanwhile, the first Gauntlet to be added to the game is Unsinkable, where players take on 30 rounds of zombies in Voyage of Despair, with each round having “unique rules” that alter gameplay and promise to make it an “insane” challenge.

The free Blackout trial continues until tomorrow, January 24th, but Xbox One players will be more excited by the arrival of the limited time Down But Not Out mode today at 10AM PT. Available for two weeks, the mode allows respawns in Blackout for the first time, but only as long as one of your squad team mates is still alive when a Collapse happens. More generally, the team has also fixed the looting interface with improvements to Stashes.

Finally in multiplayer, the Featured Playlist selection sees Chaos Domination in the top spot. That’s accompanied by Team Tactical Moshpit, Mercenary Deathmatch Moshpit, Mercenary Hardcore Moshpit, and Mercenary Capture Moshpit. In terms of maps, Elevation and Madagascar are back in rotation in standard and Hardcore playlists, but only for players with the Black Ops Pass.

  • Conflagration Liquidation (Epic): Spawn a Bonfire Sale power-up.


  • Fixed a crash that could occur when the player had Mule Kick from using the Perk Up Elixir when completing round 14 in “Unsinkable”.


  • Classified
    • Closed exploits that allowed players to jump into various exploitable areas.


Looting Interface (consoles)

  • Addressed issues where players could lose the ability to use the directional pad to scroll to items until closing and re-opening a Stash.
  • Addressed issues where players could lose the ability to change tabs after picking up items from a Stash.


  • Fixed rare crashes that could occur when interacting with items and Stashes.

All of the changes in the patch are available now with the exception of Down But Not Out mode, which goes live today at 10AM PT.


Just played a game of this. Its pretty nuts. games are much faster. The circle comes in quicker meaning shorter time frame between circle closures. Also the final circle is much larger. Finding a gun when you spawn back in is a pita. you got a pistol and unless you have a good team to spawn on that will give something up, you will be left with it.
